A Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) station in Pacoima was evacuated on Saturday after a couple brought in military explosive devices they discovered while cleaning a deceased relative’s home. The incident prompted officials to temporarily evacuate the station and nearby homes as a precaution.
The LAPD’s bomb squad used a robot to examine the plastic box containing the explosives, which were identified as military ordnances. After determining the devices were safe to move, the bomb squad transferred them to a storage facility for the U.S. military to collect.
This event occurred less than two weeks after a tragic explosion killed three Los Angeles County sheriff’s detectives at a training facility. The detectives, Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus, and William Osborn, were working with military-style grenades when one detonated. The other grenade remains missing, raising concerns about public safety.
Sheriff Robert Luna stated that extensive searches have been conducted to locate the missing grenade, but it remains unaccounted for. He emphasized that all future explosive devices, whether believed to be inert or not, will be treated as live to prevent similar tragedies.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms is investigating the explosion, with a final report expected in 45 days. Sheriff Luna has called for an independent review of the arson and explosives unit’s practices to ensure such an incident does not happen again.
