A Los Angeles police officer was shot in the chest during a gunfight in Boyle Heights on Tuesday but is expected to survive, thanks to his ballistic vest.
The incident unfolded after LAPD officers initiated a pursuit of a stolen pickup truck, which ended in a dramatic shootout.
The chase began when officers from the LAPD’s Newton Division spotted a man with a gun in a pickup truck near Washington and Alameda boulevards. The suspect led police on a high-speed pursuit, which ended when he crashed the truck into a fence at Marietta and Garnet streets. As he fled on foot, the suspect fired at officers, striking one in the chest. The officer’s ballistic vest absorbed the bullet’s impact, saving his life.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell stated that the suspect continued firing at officers, prompting them to return fire. The suspect was critically injured and underwent surgery. A gun was recovered at the scene. According to McDonnell, “Looking at the suspect’s actions, anyone in the community could have been taken out by his actions, so we are very thankful.”
Residents in the area described the chaotic scene, with one witness recounting the sound of gunfire shattering the afternoon calm. Both the officer and the suspect were taken to nearby hospitals. The suspect, who has not been identified, is expected to face multiple felony charges.
The LAPD is conducting an investigation to determine the exact number of shots fired during the exchange.
