The Los Angeles Police Department is evaluating a new restraint technique initially developed for healthcare workers at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Medical Center. This method, designed to safely manage violent or emotionally disturbed patients, aims to minimize injury risks for both patients and staff.
The technique was created by Ryron and Rener Gracie, co-owners and head instructors at Gracie University in Torrance, known for teaching Brazilian jujitsu. According to the Daily News, the method was developed at the request of the UCI Medical Center, which sought a safer way to handle challenging situations involving patients.
The Gracie brothers emphasize that the technique focuses on safety, aiming to reduce the risk of injury for everyone involved. The Los Angeles Police Department’s interest in this method highlights a growing trend of incorporating martial arts techniques into law enforcement practices to enhance safety and effectiveness.
As the LAPD considers adopting this approach, it reflects a broader effort to improve interactions between law enforcement and individuals experiencing mental health crises. The potential implementation of this technique could lead to significant changes in how police officers manage such situations, prioritizing de-escalation and safety.
