The husband of Sheylla Cabrera, a Lancaster woman found dead in the Angeles National Forest, has been charged with murder. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed a felony complaint against Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo, 36, on Thursday. Cabrera’s body was discovered wrapped in material at the bottom of an embankment in the forest on August 16, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheylla Cabrera, also known as Sheylla Lisbet Gutiérrez Rosillo, was last seen alive on August 9. Her disappearance was reported by friends and neighbors on August 12, prompting an investigation. Surveillance footage from a neighbor’s camera allegedly showed Jossimar Cabrera dragging a large object from their apartment complex, which led investigators to consider him a person of interest. The footage was consistent with how Cabrera’s remains were found, according to authorities.
Jossimar Cabrera reportedly fled to Peru with the couple’s three children after the incident. The children were found safe and taken into protective custody in Peru. Helga Rocillo, Sheylla’s mother, claims her daughter was a victim of domestic violence, alleging that Jossimar Cabrera physically and verbally abused her for years. Rocillo told Latina Noticias that her daughter planned to file a criminal report against her husband.
Peruvian authorities are cooperating with Los Angeles County officials, who are working to extradite Jossimar Cabrera. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has yet to release an autopsy report to determine the exact cause of death. The case remains under investigation, and anyone experiencing domestic violence can seek help by calling the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233.
