LA DA Hochman to Update Menendez Brothers Case at Press Conference

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman will provide an update on the Menendez brothers’ case during a news conference on Monday. The brothers, Erik and Lyle Menendez, were convicted in 1996 for the 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in Beverly Hills. They have been serving life sentences without parole, but recent developments have reignited interest in their case.

In February, Hochman expressed skepticism about new evidence presented by the brothers’ defense, which alleges sexual abuse by their father. Despite opposing a new trial, Hochman has not yet decided on a motion for resentencing, which could make the brothers eligible for parole or release based on time served. The new evidence includes a letter allegedly written by Erik Menendez to his cousin in 1988 and allegations by Roy Rosselló, a former member of the boy band Menudo, claiming abuse by Jose Menendez.

Relatives of the Menendez brothers have criticized Hochman for opposing a new trial, arguing that the abuse allegations should be considered. Anamaria Baralt, a cousin of the brothers, expressed gratitude for Governor Gavin Newsom’s directive to the state parole board to conduct a risk assessment investigation. This assessment will evaluate whether the brothers pose a risk to public safety if released.

Tamara Goodell, another cousin, has accused Hochman of being dismissive and patronizing towards the family, asking for his removal from the case. Goodell cited her rights under Marsy’s Law, which ensures victims are treated with fairness and respect.

Governor Newsom’s risk assessment findings will be shared with the Los Angeles Superior Court judge, the district attorney, and defense attorneys. Resentencing hearings are scheduled for March 20 and March 21. The brothers’ pursuit of clemency and resentencing could potentially lead to their release, depending on the outcome of these proceedings.
