LA County Offers Free Health Supplies via Vending Machines

Los Angeles County has launched 51 “Community Health Stations” to provide residents with free health supplies, including overdose prevention resources. These vending machines, introduced by the LA County Department of Public Health, offer COVID-19 tests, naloxone (known by the brand name Narcan), fentanyl test strips, and condoms. The initiative aims to make lifesaving resources accessible to underserved communities throughout the county.

Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, emphasized the importance of these stations, stating, “COVID-19 self-tests, naloxone, fentanyl test strips, and condoms allow individuals to take actions that protect themselves and others in the community.” The stations are strategically placed in accessible locations such as pharmacies, health centers, community centers, and homeless shelters.

Naloxone is a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses, including those caused by fentanyl, heroin, and prescription opioids. It is safe, easy to use, and works quickly to restore normal breathing. According to the LA County Library, no ID or proof of insurance is required to obtain naloxone from these stations.

The county plans to expand the program to 100 stations in the coming months. Residents can find their nearest Community Health Station using an interactive map on the LA County Public Health website.
