La Cañada Flintridge is bracing for a traffic jam on Friday night as three football games are scheduled to kick off simultaneously at 7 p.m.
St. Francis High School will host Muir, La Cañada High School will face Crescenta Valley, and UCLA will take on New Mexico at the nearby Rose Bowl. The Los Angeles Times has dubbed the situation “Carmageddon” due to the anticipated traffic congestion.
The high school fields are just 300 feet apart, and they share a driveway, which will serve as an Uber drop-off spot. To accommodate the influx of fans, St. Francis plans to use nearby Flintridge Prep and St. Bede middle school for parking, while La Cañada will utilize its softball and baseball fields.
According to the Los Angeles Times, interim athletic director Todd Wolfson from St. Francis High School can see all three venues from his office. He humorously suggested creating a lottery to sell off his view. Wolfson advises attendees to arrive early to watch warmups and avoid the worst of the traffic.
With all four high school teams being local, the games are expected to draw large crowds and create a festive atmosphere. Traffic reporters will likely have a busy evening, as noted by KTLA.
Residents and attendees are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly to navigate the expected congestion.
