Los Angeles is considering forming a sister city relationship with Hanoi, Vietnam, to help end the dog and cat meat trade in the Vietnamese capital. The proposal was introduced by Los Angeles Councilmember Bob Blumenfield in February and seconded by Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson. This potential partnership aims to leverage the influence of Los Angeles to encourage Hanoi to ban the controversial practice.
The Global Anti-Dog Meat Coalition, an organization dedicated to ending the consumption of dog and cat meat worldwide, has been actively working on this issue. They believe that international partnerships like the one proposed between Los Angeles and Hanoi could provide the necessary diplomatic pressure to effect change in Vietnam.
The proposal has garnered support from various animal rights groups, including In Defense of Animals, which has been advocating for animal rights since 1983. They emphasize the importance of global cooperation in addressing the ethical concerns surrounding the dog and cat meat trade.
If approved, the sister city relationship could serve as a model for other cities looking to influence animal welfare practices internationally. The decision is still pending, and further discussions are expected in the coming months.
