L.A. County Faces $828 Million Sex Abuse Settlement

Los Angeles County is preparing to pay an additional $828 million to victims of alleged sexual abuse in county-run facilities — just months after approving the largest sex abuse settlement in U.S. history.

The new proposal, listed on the county’s claims board agenda, covers about 400 additional cases not included in the $4 billion settlement approved in April. The deal still requires a vote from the Board of Supervisors before it can take effect.

The announcement follows a Los Angeles Times report that raised concerns about fraud and misconduct in the earlier settlement. Some plaintiffs admitted they were paid to file false claims, prompting the county to launch further reviews.

In a statement, Supervisor Kathryn Barger said the county aims to “compensate victims with compassion” while ensuring “strong protections are in place to safeguard taxpayers from fraud.”
