Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem bashed California Gov. Gavin Newsom for what she referred to as a “really menacing” warning he shared online, which she claims left her panicked following the assassination of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk.
Noem claimed her family and friends were immediately alarmed after Newsom’s office shared a post this past weekend that stated, “Kristi Noem is going to have a bad day today. You’re welcome, America.”
“It was cryptic and it was really menacing,” Noem said during an appearance on FOX News‘ Hannity Monday (September 22) night. “It immediately panicked my family and friends. Within, I would say, a couple of minutes of that being posted I started to get text messages and phone calls. Family, my kids saying, ‘Are you okay, Mom? Are you fine?’ They know the threats that I’ve had.”
Noem claimed that her family had already received threats from “cartels and criminals” after policing the immigration policies of President Donald Trump‘s administration.
“So you know, this is a day and age where we’ve always known that words matter, but there’s been real consequences that we have realized that have happened to incredible people like Charlie [Kirk] that we’ll have to live with forever, and I hope we all learn from that,” she added. “I hope we all learn that it’s time to start listening to each other, having civil discourse, and stop ridiculous, irresponsible posts like Governor Newsom put out there.”
U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California Bill Essayli confirmed that Newsom’s post was referred to the Secret Service in a statement shared on his X account.
We have zero tolerance for direct or implicit threats against government officials,” Essayli wrote. “I’ve referred this matter to @SecretService and requested a full threat assessment.”
Newsom has recently garnered attention by parodying President Donald Trump‘s social media approach, as well as asserting himself in the opposition of ICE raids within his state, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott‘s plan to counter gerrymandering in Texas and lawsuits challenging Trump’s tariffs.
