New York City will honor the New York Knicks, the new NBA champions, with a ticker-tape parade on Thursday (June 18) in the Canyon of Heroes. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the celebration late Saturday night after the Knicks secured a 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, ending a 53-year championship drought.
The parade will celebrate the Knicks’ third NBA championship, marking their first title since 1973. This will be the first time the Knicks receive a ticker-tape parade for their victory. Millions are expected to line the Canyon of Heroes, which stretches along Broadway from Battery Place to City Hall, to cheer on the team.
Following the parade, a ceremony at City Hall will see Mayor Mamdani present the team, including NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson, with keys to the city. The David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building and Brooklyn Borough Hall will be illuminated in blue and orange, the Knicks’ colors, on Thursday night.
Mayor Mamdani expressed the city’s long-awaited joy, stating, “For more than 50 years, New Yorkers have waited for this moment. Through near misses, heartbreak, and a hope that every year could be our year, this city never stopped believing in the Knicks.”
Further details about the parade and ceremony are expected to be announced later on Sunday.
