Kids Run For Cover As Woman Killed In Fatal Shooting Near School Bus Stop

A tragic incident unfolded in west Louisville on Wednesday (August 13) when a woman was shot and killed while walking a child to a bus stop. The shooting occurred around 8 a.m. near West Chestnut Street and 11th Street in the Russell neighborhood. The woman was transported to UofL Hospital, where she later died. Fortunately, the child was unharmed, and authorities are ensuring the family receives necessary support.

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) initially took a 15-year-old into custody, but he was later confirmed not to be the suspect. The shooter remains at large and is described as a young Black male wearing a red hoodie and black sweatpants. Images of the suspect will be released soon.

This incident marks the second shooting in the area within a week. Last week, another 15-year-old was arrested for firing shots in the same vicinity, leading to 34 charges. LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey expressed his concerns, stating, “Kids should be able to go to school, go to the bus stop in the morning without any fear of gun violence.”

The shootings occurred near two Jefferson County Public Schools, a YMCA, and a library. Following the first shooting on August 7, officers were stationed at the bus stop every morning until Tuesday (August 12). They were not present on the day of the second shooting. A meeting initially planned to discuss last week’s incident will now address both shootings.
