Katie Porter Concedes California Governor’s Race

Former Congresswoman Katie Porter has conceded in her bid to become California’s next governor. Late Tuesday (June 2), Porter announced via video that although votes were still being counted, she would not advance to the general election in November. Porter expressed pride in her campaign, which was in fifth place with about 5% of the vote as of late Tuesday.

In the early unofficial results, Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton were leading the race, each securing approximately 27% and 26% of the votes, respectively. Tom Steyer, another Democrat, followed in third place with 20% of the votes. The top two candidates will move on to the general election in November, under California’s “jungle primary” system.

Porter’s campaign focused on addressing California’s affordability and housing crisis, issues she highlighted as top priorities. Despite her concession, Porter thanked her supporters and fellow candidates, emphasizing the importance of participating in the democratic process. “Running a race like this isn’t easy,” she said. “And coming up short is hard. But democracy is worth doing hard things for.”

The race for governor has been closely watched, with Becerra and Hilton emerging as the frontrunners. Becerra, a former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary, has focused on housing, healthcare, and education. Hilton, a former Fox News host, has campaigned on cutting taxes and reducing regulations.

The election results are expected to take days or weeks to finalize as California’s vote-counting process prioritizes accuracy and access over speed. As the race continues, the focus will remain on Becerra and Hilton as they prepare for the general election.
