Vice President Kamala Harris has accepted CNN‘s invitation to debate former President Donald Trump for a second time, despite Trump insisting that he has no intention to participate in another debate.
“The American people deserve another opportunity to see Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump debate before they cast their ballots,” said Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, Harris campaign chair, in a statement obtained by NBC News on Saturday (September 21).
The proposed debate would follow a similar format to the previous two debates Trump participated in against Harris, broadcasted by ABC News and President Joe Biden for CNN prior to Biden’s decision to end his re-election campaign.
“Donald Trump should have no problem agreeing to this debate. It is the same format and setup as the CNN debate he attended and said he won in June, when he praised CNN’s moderators, rules, and ratings,” O’Malley Dillon said.
Harris previously told her supporters, “I’m trying to get another debate” during an event in Georgia on Friday (September 20). Steven Cheung, a Trump campaign spokesperson, referenced the former president’s Truth Social post in which he wrote, “THERE WILL BE NO THIRD DEBATE,” when reached by NBC News to comment in response to the Harris campaign’s announcement.
“We just don’t think it’s necessary,” Trump said during an interview with Telemundo Arizona earlier this month.
