The Justice Department is considering indicting former FBI Director James Comey for allegedly lying to Congress, as the deadline to file charges approaches. The investigation, led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, focuses on whether Comey made false statements during his testimony on September 30, 2020, regarding his handling of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Prosecutors have until next week to decide whether to proceed with charges, as the statute of limitations for perjury is five years.
“There are still internal matters being sorted out,” a Justice Department official told NBC News.
If indicted, Comey would be one of the highest-profile figures targeted during President Donald Trump’s second term. The case has gained attention due to Trump’s vocal criticism of Comey, whom he fired during his first term. He recently posted on Truth Social calling for charges against several of his political foes, including Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Leticia James.
“We can’t delay any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility. They impeached me twice, and indicted me (5 times!), OVER NOTHING. JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!” Trump wrote in a September 20th post on Truth Social.
