Judge J. Cedric Simpson is going viral again after a defendant had a profane meltdown while in court. Darrell Lester Jarrel was in court for a pre-trial hearing on a misdemeanor trespassing charge. Simpson suggested moving the case back until September to give Jarrel time to meet with his lawyer.
Jarrel did not like the suggestion and told Judge Simpson he wanted to wrap up the case so he could leave Michigan.
“I’m tired of this state; I’m ready to leave this state as soon as possible,” Jarrell said. “What’s the hold-up? It’s trespassing. I can technically leave, and you guys can issue a warrant as long I don’t return; you can kiss my a**.”
Judge Simpson was not happy with profanity being used in his courtroom and reprimanded Jarrel.
“You know what? No, no, no. You don’t come in here…” Simpson said before he was interrupted by Jarrel, who yelled, “F*** you.”
Simpson had enough of Jarrel and sentenced him to 93 days in jail for contempt of court.
“That’s contempt. That’s 93,” Simpson said.
Jarrel continued to curse at Simpson, who simply replied, “That’s another 93 days.” In total, Jarrel was sentenced to 558 days in jail before the bailiff led him out of the courtroom.
As Judge Simpson moved to the following case, the next defendant, Keith Jenkins, who watched the scene unfold on Zoom, was stunned by what he had just seen. He sat there with his jaw wide open for a few seconds as he tried to fight back laughter.
“I just seen, uh, how you doing your honor? How you doing sir,” Jenkins said after a brief pause while trying to collect himself.
Simpson previously went viral after he was overseeing a case of a defendant who appeared in court on Zoom while driving despite not having a valid license.
