Judge Blocks Trump from Sending CA Troops to Portland

U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut has blocked President Donald Trump’s attempt to deploy California National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon, for the second time in two days.

The decision, issued late Sunday, halts the administration’s plan to send at least 200 California National Guard members to address escalating anti-ICE protests in Portland. This ruling follows a similar decision on Saturday that stopped the deployment of Oregon National Guard troops to the city.

Judge Immergut’s ruling came after officials from both Oregon and California objected in court, arguing that the president lacked the legal authority to federalize and send California troops. The judge agreed, stating that there was no evidence that the protests in Portland required the presence of federalized National Guard troops. During the hearing, Judge Immergut expressed frustration with the Trump administration’s apparent attempt to circumvent her previous order by deploying troops from California instead of Oregon.

The Trump administration had planned to use the National Guard to support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal personnel amid ongoing protests. However, the judge’s order temporarily restrains the deployment until at least October 19, with a hearing scheduled for October 17 to decide on an extension.

California Governor Gavin Newsom praised the ruling, stating, “Trump’s abuse of power won’t stand.” Meanwhile, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller criticized the decision, calling it a violation of constitutional order. The Trump administration is expected to appeal the ruling.
