Joshua Tree National Park Plans $5M Upgrade

Joshua Tree National Park is set to undergo a significant $5 million infrastructure upgrade, focusing on a new west entrance station. The project, funded by entrance fees, aims to improve traffic flow and enhance the visitor experience. The construction is expected to be completed by early 2026.

The new entrance station will be located just under half a mile south of the current entrance and will feature two inbound lanes, one outbound lane, and a bypass lane in each direction. This configuration is designed to reduce congestion and streamline entry and exit for the millions of visitors the park welcomes annually. The construction contract has been awarded to L&J Building Co. LLC, a Missouri-based company.

During the construction period, visitors will continue to use the existing west entrance station, though minor traffic delays are anticipated. A temporary full closure of the west entrance is scheduled from 6 a.m. Monday (April 7) through 6 p.m. Thursday (April 10). During this closure, visitors must access the park through alternative entrances, such as the north entrance via Highway 62, which will add approximately 17 minutes to the drive.

Park officials advise visitors to purchase entrance passes in advance at Recreation.gov and to download the official National Park Service App for trip planning tools and up-to-date information. Rangers encourage responsible recreation by following posted speed limits and driving only on designated roads.

Once the new station is operational, crews will demolish the old entrance and rehabilitate the surrounding area. This upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to support park operations and improve the overall visitor experience.
