Jordan Chiles, a standout gymnast and UCLA junior, continues to excel while embroiled in a legal battle over her Olympic bronze medal. Despite the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) demand to return the medal, Chiles remains focused, leading UCLA to the Big Ten Conference gymnastics championship and a No. 3 national ranking. She was also named one of Time magazine’s women of the year, published her memoir “I’m That Girl,” and is featured in Nike’s “So Win” campaign.
The dispute began when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) stripped Chiles of her bronze medal from the Paris Olympics, citing a late appeal by the U.S. coach. The appeal was allegedly made four seconds too late, allowing Ana Barbosu of Romania to claim third place. However, USA Gymnastics provided a time-stamped video from a Netflix documentary shoot that purportedly shows the appeal was timely.
Chiles has appealed the CAS ruling to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland, arguing that CAS made procedural errors, including sending correspondence to an invalid email address. Her lawyers assert that the CAS panel head had a conflict of interest due to his ties with Romanian interests.
Throughout this ordeal, Chiles remains committed to her team. UCLA coach Janelle McDonald praised her dedication, stating, “It inspires me every single day.” Chiles draws inspiration from her teammates, including Olympians Brooklyn Moors and Chae Campbell.
