John McCain’s Oldest Son, Doug McCain, Dies at 66

Doug McCain, the oldest son of the late Senator John McCain, passed away suddenly at the age of 66 on Wednesday (May 20). An online obituary confirmed his death, and his sister, Meghan McCain, shared the news on X on Sunday (May 24), describing Doug as a “wonderful, joyful man.” Like his father, Doug served as a Navy pilot before transitioning to a long career with American Airlines.

Born on October 4, 1959, in Pensacola, Florida, Doug grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where he enjoyed surfing, baseball, and soccer. He graduated from Jacksonville Episcopal High School in 1977 and went on to study Systems Engineering at the University of Virginia. There, he participated in Navy ROTC and met his future wife, Ashley. After college, Doug joined the Navy and flew A-6 Intruders for six years before joining American Airlines, where he became a captain.

Doug is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ashley Jardine McCain, and their children, Caroline McCain Hendrickson and Douglas Shepp McCain Jr. He is also survived by his mother, Carol Shepp McCain, his brother, Andy McCain, his sister, Sidney McCain, and his stepmother, Cindy McCain. Doug was predeceased by his adoptive father, John McCain, and his biological father, Alasdair Swanson.

A private family service will be held, followed by a memorial gathering at the Princess Anne Country Club on Saturday (May 30). The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Jacksonville Episcopal High School, the University of Virginia, or a charity of choice in Doug’s name.
