William Stevenson, the ex-husband of former First Lady Jill Biden, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of his current wife, Linda Stevenson, in Wilmington, Delaware. Authorities announced the arrest on Tuesday following a grand jury indictment after a weeks-long investigation by detectives with the Delaware Department of Justice.
Stevenson, 77, was taken into custody Monday after police responded to a domestic dispute at the couple’s home in the Wilmington area just after 11 p.m. on Thursday (December 28). Officers found Linda Stevenson, 64, unresponsive in the living room.
Police have released few details about the cause of death, and it remains unclear how she died.
Stevenson remains in custody at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $500,000 bail. It is not immediately known if Stevenson has retained legal counsel.
Stevenson was married to Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975. She later married Joe Biden in 1977.
Jill Biden declined to comment through a spokesperson.
The case remains under investigation, and further details may emerge as legal proceedings continue.
