A new video reveals a fierce battle involving Big Bear’s beloved bald eagle, Jackie, who was attacked by two subadult bald eagles near Dana Point Park on Big Bear Lake’s north shore last week.
Wildlife officials rescued Jackie, who is now in critical condition at the Ojai Raptor Center, suffering from severe anemia and kidney inflammation.
The footage, taken by Duke and Anne Blackwood, shows Jackie using her talons to fend off the younger eagles. According to the Blackwoods, Jackie appeared weak and disoriented after the fight, prompting them to call for help. The San Bernardino County Fire Department and the San Dimas Raptor Rescue Team responded, ultimately transporting Jackie to the Ojai Raptor Center for treatment.
The center’s veterinary team is conducting tests to determine the underlying cause of Jackie’s illness, including potential exposure to lead, zinc, or rodenticides. While Jackie remains alert and is eating, her prognosis is uncertain. Dr. Todd Katzner, a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, noted that environmental toxins are a significant threat to eagles, with lead poisoning being a common issue.
Jackie’s two eaglets, Sandy and Luna, are being cared for by their father, Shadow, while she recovers. The eaglets have fledged but continue to rely on Shadow for food and protection. Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit operating the eagle nest camera, reported that Shadow is maintaining the nest and fending off intruders.
The community has rallied around Jackie, with many expressing support on social media. The Ojai Raptor Center is providing updates on her condition as they await test results. Wildlife experts caution that Jackie’s recovery may take weeks or longer, emphasizing the need for patience and continued care.
