On Friday (June 13), Iran launched more than 100 drones toward Israeli territory in retaliation for Israel’s recent airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the launch and stated they are actively intercepting the drones before they cross into Israeli airspace. IDF spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin assured that the military is in control of the situation.
The drone attack follows Israel’s Operation Rising Lion, which targeted key sites in Iran, including the main nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the operation as necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to ensure Israel’s survival. “If we don’t act now, we simply won’t be here,” Netanyahu said in a YouTube address.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the Israeli strikes a “declaration of war” in a letter to the United Nations. In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei promised severe retaliation against Israel, accusing it of committing crimes against Iran.
The Israeli operation resulted in significant damage to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and the deaths of several high-ranking Iranian officials and nuclear scientists. Despite the damage, Iran reported no nuclear radiation or chemical contamination.
Tensions between the two nations have escalated following the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) announcement that Iran breached its non-proliferation obligations. Iran has denied pursuing nuclear weapons but has announced plans to establish a new enrichment site.
