Investigators Treating Home Of Savannah Guthrie’s Mother As A ‘Crime Scene’

Authorities in Tucson, Arizona, are treating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today anchor Savannah Guthrie, as a crime scene after she was reported missing over the weekend. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos announced on Monday (February 2) that evidence from Nancy Guthrie’s home suggests she did not leave on her own, and urged the public to come forward with any information.

Nancy Guthrie, who requires daily medication and has limited mobility, was last seen at her home outside Tucson around 9:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. on Saturday. Her family reported her missing around noon on Sunday. Sheriff Nanos said, “We do in fact have a crime scene. We do in fact have a crime,” and emphasized, “She did not leave on her own. We know that.” He added, “Right now, we don’t see this as a search mission as much as we do a crime scene.”

The investigation involves multiple agencies, including the FBI and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, who are assisting with search and rescue operations. Drones, airplanes, helicopters, and search-and-rescue dogs have been deployed, and the Pima County homicide team is involved—a step not typically taken unless foul play is suspected, as reported by the Boston Herald. Sheriff Nanos noted, “This one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we located just looking at the scene.” He called on the local community, saying, “I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls.”

Nancy Guthrie is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. She has physical ailments but no cognitive issues, according to her family and authorities. The sheriff emphasized the urgency, noting Guthrie’s need for medication and her inability to leave on foot due to health concerns.

On Monday’s broadcast, the Today show opened with an update on the case. Savannah Guthrie was not at the anchor desk, but shared a statement through the program: “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.”

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are encouraging anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900. The family continues to work closely with law enforcement and thanks the public for their support.
