On April 15, Javier Ibarra, a 41-year-old man from Inglewood, California, was violently attacked outside his home in what is being investigated as a possible hate crime. The incident occurred on the 200 block of West Hyde Park Boulevard at 6:40 a.m. as Ibarra was heading to work.
According to KTLA, surveillance footage captured the moment when a masked suspect, dressed in a green hoodie and sweatpants, approached Ibarra from behind and began punching him in the head. The suspect shouted racial slurs, calling Ibarra a “f****** Mexican” and expressing hatred towards him. Ibarra tried to defend himself, but the attacker continued to punch and kick him, eventually throwing him to the ground.
Ibarra described the terrifying experience, saying, “All over my face, there was a lot of blood. My eye was completely closed. It was a very horrible experience because when I fell on the floor, I was thinking, ‘This guy, he’s going to kill me.'” His wife witnessed the attack and attempted to record the suspect, but he managed to escape, taking Ibarra’s house keys with him.
The suspect is believed to be between 30 and 40 years old, approximately 6 feet tall, and weighing around 200 pounds. He fled in a silver, blue, or green Chevy Malibu sedan. Ibarra, who is Hispanic, believes he was targeted because of his ethnicity, stating, “I think it’s got to be a hate crime.”
As Ibarra recovers from his injuries, his family remains fearful for their safety. “I’m more afraid, not for me, but for my daughter because she doesn’t want to go to school, she doesn’t want to go outside, she doesn’t want to play,” Ibarra said.
