Illinois Lt. Gov. Stratton Projected To Win Senate Primary

Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton was projected by NBC News to have won the Democratic Senate primary in Illinois on Tuesday (March 18).

Stratton defeated Reps. Raja Krishnamoorthi, who spent a reported $29 million on ads in the primary, and Robin Kelly to secure the Democratic nomination in the race for the senate seat set to be open following Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin‘s retirement announcement. The lieutenant governor was reported to be leading Cook County, which includes Chicago, with 41% to Krishnamoorthi’s 33.2% and Kelly’s 18.1% with an estimated 92.3% of votes reported.

Krishnamoorthi conceded defeat to Stratton, claiming he would accept defeat “unlike [President] Donald Trump” via the Chicago Tribune‘s Gregory Royal Pratt. Stratton, a native of the South Side, held a reported 20-point advantage over Krishnamoorthi in Chicago while the two were tied in the surrounding suburbs.

The 60-year-old would become the sixth Black woman to serve in the Senate if elected in November and would join Democrat Sens. Angela Alsobrooks (Maryland) and Lisa Blunt Rochester (Delaware), marking the first time three Black women served in the Senate at the same time.

“What I’ve heard from people very clearly is that they are fed up with what’s happening in Washington,” Stratton said in a recent interview with NBC News. “They are frustrated and angry that they see a president who stomps on the Constitution, who kind of takes action on a whim without thinking about what’s best for the American people. And they’re looking for a fighter in Washington, somebody who’s going to stand up and be a check on this president.”

Republican Don Tracy was projected to have defeated Jeannie Evans and Casey Chlebek in his party’s primary Tuesday night. Tracy was reported to have had 39.8% of the votes compared to Evans’ 22.9% and Chlebek’s 11.1% with an estimated 94.4% of votes reported.
