An illegal immigrant truck driver, Manvir Singh, was arrested after a fatal hit-and-run crash in Northern California on Tuesday (May 19). According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Singh killed two people on Highway 99 in Lodi and attempted to flee the scene. The DHS has requested that California authorities not release him.
Singh, who entered the U.S. illegally through Arizona in 2023, was released by the Biden administration. This incident marks the fourth time in the past year that an illegal immigrant truck driver with the last name Singh has been involved in a deadly crash in the U.S. Federal officials point to a growing trend of illegal immigrant commercial truck drivers from India.
The crash occurred around 12:20 p.m. when Singh’s truck collided with multiple vehicles, killing two occupants of a Kia and injuring five others. Singh attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office. He faces charges of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, hit-and-run resulting in death, and resisting arrest. His bail is set at $185,000.
The DHS has lodged a detainer request with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to transfer Singh into federal custody. The incident has reignited discussions about the safety risks posed by illegal immigrant truck drivers and the need for legislation like Dalilah’s Law, which aims to prevent states from issuing commercial driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.
