Crews began dismantling the iconic LAX sign on Thursday to pave the way for significant roadway improvements at Los Angeles International Airport. The removal marks a crucial step in the airport’s modernization program, which aims to alleviate traffic congestion by separating airport-bound vehicles from local traffic along Sepulveda Boulevard.
The LAX sign, consisting of three 30-foot letters, has been a familiar sight for travelers since its installation in 2000. According to ABC7, the letters will be removed over the course of a week, starting with the “X,” followed by the “A” and “L.” They will be stored nearby until they can be incorporated into new road designs, allowing people to walk up and take pictures.
Michael Christensen, Chief Airport Development Officer of Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), stated, “Today marks a significant milestone for LAX as we continue to innovate, evolve and transform LAX into a more efficient and accessible airport.” The roadway project will include pedestrian upgrades, improved signage, and more direct access to LAX Economy Parking.
The project is part of the Airfield & Terminal Modernization Program, which is expected to be completed by 2030. This initiative will enhance passenger experience, community connectivity, and airfield safety, preparing LAX for major global events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
As reported by FOX LA, the colorful 100-foot pylons at the airport entrance will also be relocated as part of the plan. The modernization efforts aim to create a world-class airport experience for years to come.
