ICE Raids Disrupting L.A. High School Football Practices

Immigration raids in downtown Los Angeles have significantly impacted high school football practices, leaving many students and families in fear. On the day immigration agents conducted raids around MacArthur Park, more than 20 players from Contreras Learning Center skipped practice. Football coach Manuel Guevara noted, “Kids were messaging me their parents don’t want them to leave their house,” highlighting the anxiety among families with students at Contreras, Roybal, and Belmont high schools.

The raids have left the community on edge, with parents unsure if they will feel safe enough to attend games in the fall. Coaches from the three schools, including Michael Galvan from Roybal and Kenneth Daniels from Belmont, are working together to support their players and families. However, the ongoing raids have made it difficult to predict how this will affect the teams in the upcoming season.

A significant incident involved a 17-year-old Contreras athlete, Nory Santoy Ramos, who was detained and deported to Guatemala with her mother. This has further fueled fears in the community, where families already face challenges such as homelessness and gang activity.

The Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent, Alberto Carvalho, has promised to make schools “safe havens,” but coaches remain concerned about students’ safety during their commutes. The raids have also affected other sports, with a noticeable decrease in practice attendance at Belmont, where enrollment has dropped significantly.

The ongoing situation has left many wondering about the future, with coaches and students taking it “day by day.” The famous East L.A. Classic game, scheduled for October 24, will consider security arrangements in light of the raids.
