A powerful derecho, characterized by hurricane-force winds, swept through the Midwest and Plains on Monday night (July 28) and into Tuesday morning (July 29), causing widespread damage and power outages. The storm, which began in southern South Dakota, moved across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest, affecting areas in Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota.
In Iowa, Sioux Center experienced the highest wind gusts, reaching 99 mph, while Spencer reported 92 mph gusts. In South Dakota, wind gusts reached 87 mph in Irene and 85 mph in Parker. The storm caused significant damage, snapping trees and damaging structures. In Hudson, South Dakota, videos captured by storm trackers showed extensive damage to trees and buildings.
Over 100,000 power outages were reported in Minnesota, with nearly 30,000 outages in Iowa. Crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible. The National Weather Service reported that the storm’s intensity increased as it moved eastward, with wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph affecting the Twin Cities metro area in Minnesota.
The severe weather is expected to continue, with more storms predicted later in the day. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center has issued alerts for parts of the Plains and Midwest, warning of potential severe weather. Residents are advised to stay weather-aware and take necessary precautions.
