President Donald Trump‘s administration will pull 700 U.S. Immigration and Customs officers from Minneapolis, decreasing Operation Metro Surge by nearly 20%, Border Czar Tom Homan announced during a press conference on Wednesday (February 4).
“My goal is, with the support of President Trump, to achieve a complete drawdown. And end the surge as soon as we can,” Homan said via POLITICO. “A complete drawdown is going to depend on continued cooperation from state and local law enforcement and the decrease of the violence, the rhetoric and the attacks” against the ICE agents.
Homan’s announcement came one week after he said he would “draw down” the number of ICE agents in Minnesota following the fatal shootings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti by ICE agents 17 days apart in Minneapolis.
“This is common sense cooperation that allows us to draw down the number of people we have here. Yes, I said it. Draw down the number of people here,” Homan said.
Homan’s previous announcement came hours after President Donald Trump warned Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey that he was “playing with fire” for insisting that local authorities wouldn’t follow federal immigration laws.
“Could somebody in his inner sanctum please explain that this statement is a very serious violation of the Law, and that he is PLAYING WITH FIRE!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social.
Frey shared a screengrab of Trump’s post on his X account shortly after.
“The job of our police is to keep people safe, not enforce fed immigration laws. I want them preventing homicides, not hunting down a working dad who contributes to MPLS & is from Ecuador. It’s similar to the policy your guy Rudy had in NYC. Everyone should feel safe calling 911,” he wrote.
Trump had previously said he intended to “de-escalate a little bit” in Minneapolis after the outrage over the shooting deaths of Good and Pretti, both of whom were U.S. citizens engaging in protests at the time of their deaths 17 days apart. The two ICE agents who opened fire on Pretti on January 24 were been placed on administrative leave, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed via USA TODAY.
