Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department, the most common way fires are reported is through public 911 calls. These calls are vital, as they alert authorities to fires quickly, allowing for a rapid response.
However, technology is increasingly playing a supportive role in firefighting efforts. New tools such as drones, camera networks, and sensors are being used to augment human capabilities. Capt. Scott emphasized the importance of innovative thinking in combating the growing severity and duration of wildfires. He told LAist, “We need to continue to think outside the box as we see wildfires increase in severity and duration” (LAist).
One such technological advancement is the Fire Integrated Real-Time Intelligence System (FIRIS), which provides real-time data on fire perimeters and hot spots. This system, along with WIFIRE, a supercomputer that models fire behavior, helps authorities make informed decisions about resource allocation and public safety measures.
Drones have also become a valuable tool for the Los Angeles Fire Department, offering cost-effective alternatives to helicopters for assessing post-fire damage and identifying hot spots. In addition, new sensor technology developed by companies like Torch Sensors aims to provide outdoor smoke detection, further enhancing early warning capabilities.
The integration of these technologies is crucial as wildfires continue to pose significant challenges. During a recent series of fires in Los Angeles County, including the Palisades and Eaton fires, over 2,000 structures were damaged or destroyed, and multiple fatalities occurred. The fires were exacerbated by extreme weather conditions, including high winds and dry brush.
As the fight against wildfires evolves, the combination of human vigilance and technological innovation will be essential in protecting communities and minimizing damage.
