CLAREMONT (CNS) – Claremont McKenna College was the target of a swatting incident Thursday.
An unidentified caller to the Claremont Police Department around 4:45 p.m. Thursday said they were inside a restroom on campus holding a victim as a hostage and threatening to harm them, police said.
Police stated that the caller also alleged they had a bomb and were going to begin walking around campus with a rifle and shoot anyone within range.
Officers from the Claremont, La Verne, Ontario and Upland police departments arrived at the campus to investigate the call.
An extensive search of the campus was conducted but no weapons, victims or a shooting suspect were found, police said.
“Extensive resources were used in response to the call for service, which was later determined to be a false report or swatting call,” police said in a statement.
Swatting is where a false report of a shooting or other serious crime is made to get an extensive police response.
Anyone with information regarding the swatting call was urged to call the Claremont Police Department at 909-399-5411.
