Honda Issues Urgent Recall For 400,000 Cars Because Tires Could Fall Off

Honda has issued a recall for 406,290 Civic vehicles in the United States due to a manufacturing defect that could cause aluminum alloy wheels to detach. The recall affects models from 2016 to 2021 equipped with 18-inch aluminum alloy accessory wheels. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from improperly installed steel lug seat inserts, which can deform during normal use and cause the wheel nuts to loosen and detach. This defect increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Although 406,290 vehicles are being recalled, Honda estimates that only 0.1% of the cars will actually need wheel replacements. The problem was traced back to a factory in Italy, where a fence separating finished and unfinished products was removed during equipment installation, leading to unfinished wheels being mistakenly shipped as finished products.

Honda has not received any reports of crashes or injuries related to the defect. Dealers will inspect and replace the affected wheels and hubs free of charge. Owner notification letters will be mailed on December 8, 2025. Owners can also contact Honda’s customer service for more information.
