A homeless man was arrested on Monday (November 18) after a series of unprovoked stabbings across Manhattan, New York City, which left two men dead and a woman critically injured. The 51-year-old suspect, who has not been named, was found with blood on his clothes and two kitchen knives in his possession. The victims’ names have not been released.
The first attack occurred around 8:30 a.m. on West 19th Street, where a 36-year-old construction worker was stabbed near his worksite. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Two hours later, a 68-year-old man was attacked while fishing near East 30th Street. He also died from his injuries. The third victim, a 36-year-old woman, was stabbed multiple times near the United Nations headquarters on East 42nd Street. She is currently in critical condition at a local hospital.
The suspect was apprehended shortly after the third attack, thanks to a passing cab driver who witnessed the incident and alerted the police. The suspect, who has a history of mental illness and eight prior arrests, was taken into custody near the United Nations.
Mayor Eric Adams called the violence “a clear, clear example” of failures in the criminal justice system and mental health system. He also raised questions about why the suspect was out on the streets despite being sentenced in a criminal case a few months ago.
The investigation into the motive behind the attacks is ongoing.
