Hero Police Dog Tracked Missing Boy During North Carolina Snowstorm

A police K-9 named Bo is being praised for tracking down a missing 13-year-old boy with special needs during a dangerous snowstorm in Gastonia, North Carolina, on Saturday (January 31). The boy had left his home on foot without proper clothing just as a historic nor’easter brought blizzard conditions and freezing temperatures to the region.

The Gastonia Police Department said that K-9 Bo, a bloodhound, and his handler, Sgt. Rowland, were called in after officers received a missing persons alert for the teen, who has autism. Officers from multiple agencies quickly set up a search perimeter while Bo was given one of the boy’s belongings to catch his scent. Working through snow and darkness, the K-9 led officers across challenging terrain. The search ended when the child wandered into the secured area and was found by Gaston Emergency Medical Services, cold but unharmed.

Authorities said the boy was safely reunited with his family and did not need medical care. The Gastonia Police Department praised the swift response of all agencies involved.

The police department highlighted the teamwork and dedication involved in the rescue, stating, “This successful outcome was made possible by quick action, strong teamwork, and the dedication of everyone involved—especially a snowy snouted K-9 Bo who performed well in the midst of severe weather.”
