BEVERLY HILLS (CNS) – Actress Helen Mirren, perhaps best known for her Oscar-winning portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen,” will receive the Golden Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Award in January, honoring her “decades of work on screen and in television.”
“Helen Mirren is a force of nature and her career is nothing short of extraordinary,” Helen Hoehne, president of the Golden Globes, said in a statement announcing the honor. “Her transcendent performances and commitment to her craft continue to inspire generations of artists and audiences alike. It is a profound honor to present her with the Cecil B. DeMille Award.”
Mirren, 80, is a 17-time Golden Globe nominee and a three-time winner. She won prizes for best actress in a miniseries or TV movie for “Losing Chase” in 1995, and won twice in 2005, for her starring role in “The Queen” and her work in a miniseries or TV movie for “Elizabeth I.”
Her other film credits include “The Madness of King George,” “The Mosquito Coast,” “Excalibur,” “White Nights,” “Gosford Park,” “The Door,” “Hitchcock,” “Trumbo,” “Golda,” “Barbie” and “RED.”
She will receive the DeMille Award during a new televised event dubbed “Golden Eve” on Jan. 8, a few days before the Jan. 11 Golden Globe Awards ceremony. “Golden Eve” will also feature the winner of the Globes’ Carol Burnett Award for career achievement in television. That honoree will be announced at a later date.
Previous recipients of the DeMille Award include Audrey Hepburn, Sidney Poitier, Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor, Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Barbra Streisand, Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey.
