Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is speaking out after a report that he created a second Signal group chat that included his wife, Jennifer, and brother, Phil, where he allegedly shared details about military operations. While speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday (April 21), Hegseth blasted the report, blaming it on “disgruntled former employees.”
“You know, what a big surprise that a bunch of leakers get fired and suddenly a bunch of hit pieces come out from the same media that pedaled the Russia hoax,” Hegseth said.
“This is what the media does,” Hegseth continued. “They take anonymous sources from disgruntled former employees, and then they try to slash and burn people and ruin their reputations. Not going to work with me.”
The New York Times first reported on the existence of this second chat, which follows another Signal chat involving top Trump administration officials. The Pentagon’s acting inspector general is investigating these communications. The chat was reportedly used to discuss plans for airstrikes against Houthi militants in Yemen. The group, dubbed “Defense Team Huddle,” included 13 members and was set up during Hegseth’s confirmation process.
The controversy adds to the turmoil at the Pentagon, which has seen several firings and resignations in recent weeks.
