Heat on the Rise Across Southland

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Summer temperatures will heat up across Southern California this week, with some interior areas likely to reach the triple- digits over the next few days.

Forecasters said “potentially dangerous heat” could develop in areas away from the immediate coast.

A heat advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday to 8 p.m. Friday for the Santa Clarita, San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys, along with the San Gabriel Mountains and the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway corridor. National Weather Service forecasters said those areas could see temperatures of 90 to 100 degrees

“The warmest temperatures with this event are expected to occur Wednesday and Thursday afternoons with only a very modest cool down Friday providing little relief,” according to the NWS. “Temperatures are expected to cool down slightly more over the weekend, but remain above normal into the following week.”

The Los Angeles inland coastal area, including downtown Los Anglees, will be under a heat advisory from 10 a.m. Wednesday through 8 p.m. Friday, with temperatures of up to 90 degrees possible.

Forecasters said the higher temperatures are thanks to a weakened onshore flow reducing the morning and evening cloud cover in most of the area.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health urged residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illness. The department issued the following recommendations:

— Drink plenty of water and keep hydrated throughout the day.

— If you must go out, plan your day to avoid going out during the hottest hours, and wear sunscreen.

— Wear lightweight, light-colored clothes, and wear a hat or use an umbrella.

— Cars get very hot inside, even if the windows are cracked or open. Never leave children or pets alone in cars. Call 911 immediately if you see a child or pet in a car alone.

— Check on those at risk for heat-related illness, like those who are sick or have chronic conditions, older adults, pregnant women, children, those who live alone, pets and outdoor workers and athletes.
