A 12-year-old girl fell from a chairlift at Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort in California on Saturday (January 31), after dangling by her arms in a harrowing scene captured on video and widely shared on social media. The incident unfolded when the young snowboarder, who appeared to be unsecured in the chairlift, slipped as she boarded and was unable to lower the safety bar in time, according to multiple reports.
Video footage shows the girl gripping the chairlift while her legs, still attached to her snowboard, flailed above the snow. Staff members at the resort rushed to the scene, quickly placing padding and a safety net beneath her in an attempt to break her fall. Despite these efforts, the girl missed most of the net and landed hard on the ground.
According to the girl’s mother, who commented publicly after the incident, her daughter “miraculously walked away with no broken bones or major injuries.” She emphasized that there was little time to react: “She slipped down right away. There was nothing that anyone did wrong. It was a series of small choices that happened quickly that led to a fluke accident.”
The mother also thanked the Mammoth Mountain staff for their fast response and support, adding, “We held on as long as we could. Long enough to have people get into position to allow her to walk away.”
Despite the frightening ordeal, the family said they will continue skiing and look forward to returning to the slopes when the girl is ready.
