Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn is advocating for improved cellular service on the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro to aid individuals in crisis. In a letter to California Secretary of Transportation Toks Omishakin, Hahn emphasized the need for better cell reception on the bridge, which has a history of deaths by suicide. Hahn’s concern is that poor cell service could prevent someone in crisis from reaching the Suicide Crisis Line, 988, or contacting a family member for help.
The California Department of Transportation, which owns the bridge, stated that cellular providers are responsible for installing towers and mentioned an airspace leasing program to facilitate this. Hahn believes that the ongoing construction project on the bridge, which includes replacing the deck, railings, fences, and median barrier, presents an opportunity to collaborate with cellular providers to improve connectivity. Construction is expected to start this winter and conclude before the 2028 Olympic Games.
Hahn’s efforts coincide with the county’s proclamation of September as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and September 8 as 9-8-8 Day. According to Hahn’s office, suicide was the 14th leading cause of death in L.A. County in 2023, and the third leading cause among young people aged 10 to 24.
The 9-8-8 hotline, a national suicide prevention and mental health crisis line, began operating in July 2022. However, technical issues have occasionally routed callers to the wrong locations, hindering emergency responses. Hahn and her fellow supervisors are also addressing recent federal funding cuts that affected the hotline’s specialized routing for LGBTQ+ callers. Hahn’s motion directs the county’s Department of Mental Health to promote resources available for those in mental health crises, ensuring that everyone can access help when needed.
The Los Angeles Suicide Prevention Networks and the county’s Department of Mental Health will host the 15th annual Suicide Prevention Summit at Pasadena City College on September 12 and 13. Anyone in crisis can reach out to the Suicide Crisis Line by dialing 988. Help is always available.
