A Louisiana grandmother is accused of running over her 5-year-old grandson while driving drunk at 7:00 a.m., local authorities announced during a press conference on Tuesday (November 11).
Kristen Anders, 55, was pulling her 2016 GMC Yukon out of her driveway in Slidell as her grandson, Carson Lawson, was positioned in front of the vehicle while waiting for the school bus. Anders was allegedly unaware that her grandchild was outside and continued moving forward, fatally striking the child with her SUV.
Slidell Police Department Traffic Fatality investigators responded to the scene and observed that Anders showed signs of impairment. The grandmother was determined to have been driving under the influence of alcohol and central nervous system depressants and placed under arrest for vehicular homicide.
“This is any parent’s worst nightmare,” said Slidell Police Chief Daniel Seuzeneau. “I was at the scene this morning, as well as several of our officers. This affects everyone. This hits home hard for all of us and all of the first responders who were at that scene. I spoke with the victim’s mother several times today and there isn’t anything I can say to make this situation any better. All we can do is pray for their peace. Go home. Hug your kids or grandkids a little tighter tonight. Life is precious and we never know when tragedy could strike for any of us.”
