Governor Gavin Newsom of California has launched a new tourism campaign aimed at encouraging Canadians to visit the Golden State. This initiative comes in response to a significant decline in Canadian tourism, which has been attributed to policies enacted by President Donald Trump. The campaign, created in partnership with Visit California, seeks to rekindle the strong tourism ties between California and Canada.
In a video shared on social media, Newsom highlights the state’s attractions, such as its beaches, national parks, and renowned wine and food, while emphasizing California’s welcoming nature. He distances California from the Trump administration, stating that the state is “2,000 miles from Washington and a world away in mindset” as reported by KCRA.
The campaign is part of a $5.2 million investment by Visit California to boost international travel, particularly from Canada. The number of Canadian tourists visiting California dropped by 12% in February compared to the previous year, a decline linked to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Yahoo News reports that these tariffs have also led to a decrease in bookings and cancellations of U.S. trips by Canadian travel companies.
In addition to the tourism campaign, Newsom met with British Columbia Premier David Eby to explore opportunities for expanding California’s partnership with Canada, including collaborations in the lumber industry and national transportation corridors. Newsom’s efforts aim to reassure Canadians that California remains a welcoming and desirable destination, despite the political climate in Washington, D.C. The Independent notes that Newsom’s administration is committed to maintaining a strong partnership with Canada.
