A Republican congressman is calling for a formal investigation into Bad Bunny‘s Super Bowl halftime performance, claiming it contained inappropriate content for a primetime broadcast.
Republican Rep. Andy Ogles from Tennessee posted a letter on Monday evening addressed to the House Energy and Commerce Committee demanding an inquiry into the NFL and NBCUniversal over their “prior knowledge, review, and approval” of the Puerto Rican superstar’s performance.
In his post, Ogles described the show as “pure smut” featuring “explicit displays of gay sexual acts, women gyrating provocatively, and Bad Bunny shamelessly grabbing his crotch while dry-humping the air.” He further claimed the singer’s Spanish-language lyrics “openly glorified sodomy and countless other unspeakable depravities.”
The congressman specifically mentioned Bad Bunny’s songs Safaera and Yo Perreo Sola, arguing their sexual content would be “readily apparent across any language barrier.” However, during the actual performance, Bad Bunny refrained from singing the most explicit lyrics from these songs.
“These flagrant, indecent acts are illegal to be displayed on public airways,” Ogles declared in his letter. “American culture will not be mocked or corrupted without consequence.”
The performance, which marked the first Super Bowl halftime show performed almost entirely in Spanish, reportedly drew more than 135 million viewers, making it the most-watched halftime show in history.
Ogles wasn’t the only Republican lawmaker to express outrage. Rep. Randy Fine of Florida claimed on social media that the halftime show was “illegal” and said he would contact FCC chairperson Brendan Carr to call for “dramatic action” against the NFL, NBC, and Bad Bunny.
President Donald Trump also criticized the performance, calling it “absolutely terrible” and “an affront to the Greatness of America.”
Representatives for NBC and the NFL have not yet responded to requests for comment on Ogles’ demands for an investigation.
