American skier Breezy Johnson will leave the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics with both a gold medal and an engagement ring after her boyfriend, Connor Watkins, proposed at the base of the super-G run in Cortina D’Ampezzo on Thursday (February 12), NBC News reports.
A visibly emotional Johnson, who previously won gold in the alpine downhill event on Sunday (February 8), accepted after Watkins dropped to a knee in the finish area and raised a silver ring with a blue gem at its center, with the two sharing a kiss as her teammates and officials cheered. Watkins also gave Johnson a piece of wood stating, “Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy?” a reference to Taylor Swift‘s song ‘The Alchemy.’
Watkins said he planned the moment for a year but it turned out “above and beyond our wildest imagination” while Johnson said she had a hunch her fiancé would propose, saying she “may have told him that I just always kind of had the dream of getting engaged at the Olympics.”
“I mean, that was my hope!” she added when asked if she dreamt of getting engaged at the same Olympic event she had also won a gold medal via NBC News. “But it’s definitely a lot more crazy with everything just happening all at once, and the reality of it is so different than the way you imagined, and so much better.”
Johnson was among 17 skiers who didn’t finish the super-G on Thursday, but won her first gold and overall Olympic medal in the women’s downhill final with a time of 1:36.10 on Sunday.
