Glendale Housing Of ICE Detainees Raises Sanctuary Law Concerns

Glendale is under scrutiny for housing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees in its city jail, which some immigration advocates argue violates California’s sanctuary state law. Since January, 82 individuals detained by ICE have been held at the Glendale City Jail. According to a city spokesperson, these detainees typically spend between six to 12 hours in the facility, but they are not fingerprinted or booked during their stay.

The practice has sparked debate over whether Glendale’s actions conflict with California’s sanctuary state law, which limits local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities. The law aims to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation by restricting the involvement of local agencies in immigration enforcement.

While the city maintains that it is not violating the sanctuary law, the situation has raised questions among immigration advocates about the extent of local cooperation with ICE. The city spokesperson told NBC4 that the detainees’ short stays and lack of booking procedures are in compliance with the law.
