GKN Aerospace Exec Addresses Garden Grove Chemical Crisis

Steve Carlin, Senior Vice President of GKN Aerospace, spoke directly to the public on Tuesday at a special Garden Grove city council meeting.

This marks the first time a company executive has addressed the community since last month’s chemical crisis that led to the evacuation of 50,000 residents. The crisis began on Thursday, May 21, when a compromised storage tank at GKN’s facility threatened to explode, forcing residents to evacuate.

During the meeting, Carlin expressed regret, stating, “On behalf of GKN and the Garden Grove plant, I want to say I am sorry that this event occurred.” He faced pointed questions from city leaders and residents about the incident and its aftermath. Carlin agreed to host a town hall meeting to address ongoing community concerns but did not provide a specific timeline.

The chemical crisis involved a tank containing methyl methacrylate, a volatile compound used in plastics manufacturing. The tank’s failure exposed regulatory gaps, as it was not covered by California’s toughest accidental-release prevention rules. The South Coast Air Quality Management District had previously flagged compliance issues at the facility, which is now classified as a “major source” of emissions.

In response to the crisis, GKN Aerospace donated $3 million to the OC Community Resilience Fund to assist affected residents. However, many locals, including Councilmember Phillip Nguyen, argue that this is insufficient. Nguyen emphasized the financial strain on residents, stating, “The five-day evacuation has actually hurt them badly.”

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office has launched a criminal inquiry into the incident, and community advocates are calling for stricter regulations on facilities storing hazardous chemicals. The incident has prompted discussions about potential new laws to prevent similar crises in the future.
