These days, many parents choose a name for their child that isn’t mainstream. Sometimes the names are beautiful and unique, but other times they, well, aren’t. When most people encounter one of the not-so-nice monikers, they probably don’t say anything, but that wasn’t the case for one woman who was appalled at the name her niece was given.
The woman shared her story on Reddit, revealing that her younger sister, Ramona, named her daughter after a character from the fantasy series The Wheel of Time. The name she chose was Egwene (pronounced: Eh-Gwen). At the time, the older sibling tried to speak sense into Ramona by “calmly” explaining that the name could lead to bullying. Ramona didn’t like that and “blew up” at her, so her sister kept quiet, but now that her niece is 11, Egwene apparently hates her name and laments how teachers “always get it wrong” and students constantly tease her.
Ramona vented to her sister how Egwene “won’t shut up about her name and she doesn’t know what she’s gonna do about her.” The girl’s aunt responded, sarcastically saying, “If only someone had warned you.” When asked what she meant, she told her sister that she “named her daughter something stupid and now she’s facing the consequences.” That caused the Ramona to not allow her sister to see her niece, claiming she is putting “bad thoughts into her head.”
The sister has since updated the post, revealing that she will apologize for her timing and tone, but not for saying Egwene is a bad name. She also plans to set aside around $200 for the girl so when she turns 18, she will have a fund all set for her to change her name. It’s something many commenters, who think the name Egwene is “hideous,” called “the best birthday gift ever.”
