Giant Spiders The Size Of A Human Hand Spreading Across The US

The Joro spider, a brightly-colored arachnid native to Asia, is rapidly spreading across the United States. First spotted in Georgia in 2013, this species has now been seen in at least eight states, including Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, California, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The Joro spider, known for its large size—comparable to a human hand—has expanded its range through a process called “ballooning,” where young spiders release silk threads to catch the wind and travel long distances.

Despite their intimidating size and appearance, experts assure that Joro spiders pose no significant threat to humans.

The Joro spider’s ability to thrive in urban environments sets it apart from other species. Research from the University of Georgia indicates that these spiders are unaffected by urban stressors such as noise and traffic. Their high metabolism and cold tolerance allow them to survive in diverse climates, potentially enabling them to spread further north.

While the Joro spider is not dangerous to humans, its invasive nature raises ecological concerns. Experts worry that it could displace native spider populations and impact local ecosystems. To monitor their spread, ecologists encourage the public to report sightings to platforms like iNaturalist or Joro Watch.

As Joro spiders continue to expand their territory, residents in affected areas are advised to remove them using a broom or insecticide if they become a nuisance. Despite their presence, these spiders contribute to controlling pest populations by feeding on small insects.
