Georgia Election Interference Case Against President Trump To Move Forward

The case against President Donald Trump and several allies for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia will continue under a new prosecutor. In September, the Prosecuting Attorney’s Council of Georgia assigned the case to Peter Skandalakis, following the removal of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis due to an “appearance of impropriety” related to a personal relationship with a special prosecutor she had hired.

Skandalakis, director of the council, announced his appointment in a statement, explaining that he took the case himself after being unable to find another prosecutor willing to take it on. Skandalakis emphasized the public’s interest in the case and his commitment to making an informed decision on how to proceed.

The indictment, originally filed by Willis in August 2023, charges Trump and 18 others under Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) for allegedly conspiring to change the election outcome. The case gained attention when Trump was briefly detained in an Atlanta jail in August 2023, where he had his mug shot taken.

Despite the legal challenges, Skandalakis received the investigative files, consisting of 101 boxes and an eight-terabyte hard drive, from Willis’ office. He has yet to complete his review but is determined to ensure a transparent process.

While President Trump’s legal team, led by attorney Steve Sadow, remains confident that a fair review will lead to the case’s dismissal, Skandalakis has the option to continue with Willis’ approach, modify the charges, or dismiss the case altogether. The case’s future remains uncertain as Skandalakis reviews the extensive evidence.
